FAST TRACK Driving Instructor Training
The first step you will need to do to start your journey is applying through the government website for your DBS check and to obtain you PRN number which will be used throughout your training.
Part 1 - Theory Test & Hazard Perception
While you are waiting for your DBS and PRN to arrive you can start practicing for your Theory and Hazard perception test. Once you have your PRN number you will be able to book your Part 1 test. During this time you can also start training for your Part 2 exam.
Part 2 - Practical Test
For the Part 2 test you will have to conduct a driving test just like one of your future students. The difference is they are looking for a higher standard of driving and your test will last 60 minutes. During your test you will be allowed a maximum of 5 driver faults (minors). There is no minimum number of hours that you need to fulfill before going to test, it will be in agreement with your instructor that you are ready for your test.
These lessons are charge at an hourly rate of £50.
Part 3 - Teaching Exam
For the Part 3 you need to complete a minimum of 40 training hours before you can apply for your pink licence. These 40 hours can work around your current commitments but has to be done before your theory test expires. We can then apply for your Trainee Licence (Pink Licence). You need to complete a further 20 training hours before going for your Part 3 test.
For your 40 hours of training these would be done over 2 weeks, 3 days of 8 hours one week and 2 days of 8 hours the following week. After these have been completed we can apply for your Trainee Licence (Pink licence) and you'll be able to start teaching and earning.
This intensive 40 course is only £1500, a reduced rate than if you were to do it week by week.
As a PDI we don't believe in charging a lower rate like other schools do. You will be earning the same hourly rate as the rest of the team.
Once you have a start date on your Pink licence you would then be able to conduct and charge for your lessons that you are providing, you are limited to 20 hours of teaching per week on your pink licence. During your pink licence you need to have another 20 hours of teaching. This would be either one of our trainers coming and sitting in the car while you teach a lesson or out in the car by ourselves. These would still be chargeable at the rate of £50 per hour. You have 6 months from starting your pink licence to passing your Part 3 test, you are allowed a maximum of 3 attempts to pass your Part 3 test.
The way the pink licence works is that you are allowed to take on students and charge them for lessons meaning that you start making an income. I don’t charge students less for lessons by a PDI as they have gone through the same training and cost as an ADI, the current rate is £42.50 per hour. The hourly rate is reviewed regularly with the price in your area.
The way the pink licence works is that you are not allowed to advertise for work as you are not a qualified driving instructor. Therefore, PDI’s work through companies who provide them with work, at Coffey’s School of Motoring we take all the stress and hassle away from you and provide you with students and a sign written roof box or sign writing on your car, whichever you prefer. Should you require more students and we don’t have any suitable on the waiting list we would advertise for you, all costs are covered through a franchise fee of only £50 per week.
